Brotherhood Speaker Series: Mythology of Judaism
Sunday, October 19, 2025 • 27 Tishrei 5786
9:45 AM - 12:00 PMSouth Building - FoyerJudaism is not often associated with mythology, yet it possesses a rich tradition of mythic stories—about creation, angels and demons, and the end of the world. These narratives are found in the Hebrew Bible (Tanakh), rabbinic texts (Talmud and Midrash), medieval literature, mystical writings such as the Zohar, and Hasidic tales. From a folkloric and anthropological perspective, 'mythology' is not a pejorative term. Rather, it refers to the sacred stories through which a culture explains the origins of the world, the nature of good and evil, and humanity’s role in the cosmos. Myths convey deep meaning and psychological truth—what Carl Jung called a human need for order and significance.
Although rooted in monotheism and law, Judaism is full of mythic imagination. Its myths focus not on gods and heroes, but on cosmic drama, moral struggle, and hidden spiritual realities. In this session, we’ll explore stories about supernatural beings, the afterlife, and apocalyptic visions—many drawn from lesser-known or non-canonical sources.
